Have you ever been so in love with a book, that you were sad that it ended? Sad that you couldn’t continue living in the world where the characters you loved so much would be in? Yeah, this book did that for me. My “one more chapter” mindset led me to well worth a third of this book and eventually finishing the book. Stayed up a little later than usual on a work night but worth it? I think yes. This book had me head over heels, swooning over the main characters.
We are introduced to the story with Alexis Montgomery, leaving her aunt’s funeral and dreading the two hour drive home to Minneapolis. What’s even better is that her car is stuck in a ditch which was just great. A call to the nearest tow truck said they’d be there in an hour – even better. Until she meets a man who was able to check her tires and fender and shortly after her car is up and running again and she’s off … to the nearest bar – The VFW. Where she spots the Truck Guy with his friends. After a bet on who could take her home, she ends up going home with no other than the Truck Guy aka Daniel.
Daniel Grant who she later learns is a handyman, a carpenter and the mayor of small-town Wahkan. He was 10 years younger than her – and had a baby goat who he dressed in pajamas. He owned a B&B and the Grant family had been mayors for generations. Oh, and did I mention he had a Golden Retriever who always seemed just as excited to see her as Daniel did? OK on to Alexis. ER doctor, coming from a family of surgeons at Royaume Northwestern – 125 years to be exact. 2 different people from completely different worlds, carrying on each of their family’s legacies.
Of course, they fall in love and it is through a bunch of complications. They agree on a short-term relationship without titles – knowing it would come to an end. Though Daniel was desperately hoping he could change that. Alexis would drive the 2 hours to Wakan to see Daniel and be able to escape reality for a bit, while enjoying every moment with Daniel. Through her numerous visits with Daniel, she grew to become more independent. Growing up from a family of wealth, where she never had to work for anything (i.e. clean and cook) and always had a housekeeper to do things for her, she didn’t know how to do the basics until Daniel showed her.
Alexis was in denial that she was in love with Daniel throughout most of the book. Her mind was more focused on how their worlds collided in the worst way possible. Her family would never accept someone like Daniel no matter how much he meant to her, because he was no surgeon. And, she had her family’s legacy to carry on.
Alexis finally finds the courage to do what is right for herself and her sanity. As for what that is, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
It was super hard putting this book down. This book does deal with some sociology/abuse stuff and so much of what went on in this book felt real, relatable, and I sympathized with the characters. But, I absolutely loved this book, and if you have a soft spot for romance novels like I do, you will fall in love with it as well. At least I hope you will 🙂
